I’ve taken some time to compose my thoughts on the Indiana game as I didn’t want to write off of pure emotion. Not to mention this game has now been analyze left, right and sideways and there aren’t many angles left to cover. Yes, Terrence Jones left his game on the bus, the Cat’s should have fouled and we are all lucky Darius Miller was not injured while the fans stormed the court. Those are all things that have been discussed so I’m going to file them away and move on to something else.
As a Kentucky fan living in Louisville I get the “luxury” of constant UL sports coverage and talk radio. Lifelong friends of mine are Cardinal fans, as well as my coworkers which I see on a daily basis. As a Cat fan in the “ville” you have to grow up with a thick skin and also the realization that both fanbases are the same….though neither will admit it.
You see, after the Hoosiers hit that last second shot, facebook and twitter exploded with my “friends” who are Louisville fans cheering for Indiana. You would have thought they just won the national championship! Now…before I go blasting the red guys, I will say, Kentucky fans do this too. Personally, this is not a past time I partake in as I am a big believer in karma…but it does happen, especially when the number one team in America goes down in such an exciting fashion.
While it was annoying and frustrating losing to Indiana as well as seeing Card fans blow up my social media network as if they had won, after thinking about it, I got a sense of peace. The thing is, what goes around comes around. This loss has woken a giant, and this giant will not go down easy. There is no doubt in my mind that Kentucky basketball is now more focused than ever. They realize that a game can be lost in an instant and that they are not invincible. If one fan from an opposing team believes they are going to come into Rupp Arena and take down this giant, well they are surely delusional.
I do have advice to my UK brethren: Don’t be them. I ask you not to stoop to the level of an IU or UL fan by blasting the other team on twitter or facebook. When an opposing fan comes into Rupp arena, continue to welcome them with friendly banter and competition. I have no doubt the boys will do the work on the court and at that time, it will be all of the trash talking you need.
