Second Quarter Woes Doom Kentucky at South Carolina

Kentucky got off to a solid start on the road at South Carolina last night, but a woeful second quarter turned hope into a disastrous loss.

The Wildcats (2-2) had four turnovers, including three by quarterback Cutter Boley, in the second quarter alone. The end result was a damaging 35-13 loss to the Gamecocks.

Early in the second frame, South Carolina got to Boley leading to a scoop and score on the other end:

From that point forward, the Gamecocks were in control of the game (by the way, do we have to call every normal football play that USC makes “Beamer Ball” at this point?).

After the fumble, Boley threw two interceptions before halftime and the Wildcats fumbled again on the last play of the half.

Kentucky competed better in the second half, but the damage was already done and the offense couldn’t get the Cats back in the game.

In his first SEC road start, Boley was 10-for-19 for 124 yards, 0 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

The lone bright spot for Kentucky, outside of punter Aidan Laros (2 for 112 yards – 56.0 average) and kicker Jacob Kauwe (2-for-2 field goals), was running back Seth McGowan. He toted the ball 17 times for 112 yards and a touchdown.

Things don’t get any easier for Kentucky after this one. The Wildcats upcoming schedule is at Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, at Auburn and Florida.

Ouch.
