Ken Pomeroy: With Terrence Jones, Less is More

One of the most respected names in basketball analysis, Ken Pomeroy, has an insider article (pay) for ESPN where he breaks down players who do extremely well in a particular statistic one year and see their proficiency drop the following year.

Among those players is Terrence Jones, who led UK in rebounds and blocked shots last year. Here is what Ken had to say about Terrence.

Jones has been the target of some criticism this season for a wavering attitude and a lack of aggressiveness, especially after his lackluster play in a December loss to Indiana. Jones used 27.9 percent of Kentucky’s possessions while he was on the court as a freshman, a figure that has dropped to 22.3 percent this season. He’s an interesting case because it’s not as if Kentucky is full of ball hogs this season. No player uses as many possessions as Brandon Knight did last season, and the Wildcats have one of the most balanced offenses in the country — seven of the eight players in John Calipari’s rotation have a usage rate between 18 percent and 23 percent.

While other players may be seeing a decline in their numbers predominantly because of their own performance, I believe Terrence has maintained pretty well throughout the season, save for his stumble in Indiana. I think the change in Terrence’s usage is clearly a product of being on a team with so many weapons. And particularly regarding the rebounding and (of course) blocked shots, being on a team with Anthony Davis.
