A QB Controversy Brewing?

If you watched the LSU game yesterday, you know Maxwell [STRIKE]Smart[/STRIKE] Smith started the 3rd quarter to try and spark the offense.

Well, there wasn’t much of a spark, but the offense did look sparkish before the fumble and touchdown and the same ole stuff kept happening.

Joker Phillips spoke about Smith today in his teleconference and it sounds like there is definitely a competition brewing to start vs. USC and beyond.

Here is an excerpt from the Cat Scratches blog on what Joker said:

Arguably the biggest story that came out of the defeat was insertion of freshman Maxwell Smith at quarterback to start the second half. Down 14-0, the decision was made to go with the promising freshman because the team “needed a spark.” Morgan Newton eventually did return to the game, leading UK on a late scoring drive and will begin the week with the first team. “We’ll always have a competition, but somebody’s got to get the first reps in practice,” Phillips said. “Morgan will get the first reps in practice. If we feel like Max, who got a couple reps this week, gives us the best chance to win, we’ll go with him.”

I would bet my car that Newton starts this Saturday, but I think Joker did show that he will throw Smith in there if things look stagnant.(which seems like all the time)
