Would a Loss to UL Sink the Whole Season?

I’ve been listening to a bit of the chatter on the internet in regards to Kentucky’s upcoming football season. And as most of you can already surmise, it’s kind of bleak.

Of course, you don’t have to take my word for it. Ticket sales thus far this season back that fact up.

Despite all the negativity we’re hearing across the Bluegrass, there’s still a glimmer of hope for this season. A bowl game, however unlikely it may seem, is still a real possibility. But it mostly rests on the upcoming Governor’s Cup.

Allow me to explain, since you’re no doubt confused or think I’m crazy. Let’s say Kentucky beats the Dirty Birds this weekend. After that, they should be able to pick up two wins over Kent State (who had a player run over 60 yards in the wrong direction in their opener. We got this.) and Western Kentucky. Also, there’s a late-season gimme against Samford. That’s four wins of the six needed to become bowl eligible. You can probably cross Florida, Arkansas, Georgia and Missouri off the list of possible wins, which leaves Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and Tennessee. None of these games will be easy, especially considering Vandy’s impressive effort against South Carolina on Thursday. That said, they’re still winnable games. And they’ll have to win two out of three to get to that six-win plateau.

However, if those idiots from Loserville somehow manage to eek a victory over our beloved Cats, the road gets a little trickier. Instead of having to win two out of three over the three-headed monster that is UT, Vandy and Miss. St., they have to win all three. That’s no tall order, kiddoes. Despite the win last season, UK has been snakebit by UT for the longest time. And the Cats have struggled over past season in winning games they should win. That crack in the door you see? It’s closing faster and faster.

So when you’re watching the game this Sunday, just remember a lot more than state pride is on the line.
