What if WVU Joined the SEC?

Time for a trip to fantasy land boys and girls. This is a land where we pretend that our couch burning brethren to the east join our far superior conference and the UK/WVU rivalry becomes one of the biggest in the nation.

What if WVU really joins the SEC?

Think of the last two match-ups Kentucky has had versus West Virginia in the NCAA tournament. Two years ago, the Mountaineers knocked our team full of first round NBA draft picks out with 3 point shot after 3 point shot. In a game where the boys in blue couldn’t find the basket with a GPS device and West Virginia couldn’t miss a backwards, 360 degree, blindfolded three pointer, Wildcat fans covered their eyes and WVU fans…well, let’s be honest they probably burned stuff. This was the year Kentucky was supposed to win it all, NO ONE had more talent than that team and WVU played the role of dream crusher.

This past post season these two squads met up again, though Kentucky with completely different players and WVU missing their star Da’Sean Butler. This time around the Cats pulled out the carpet from underneath Huggy Bear and his team of Mountaineers to charge on to the Final Four….it was almost poetic in a way.

All in all, they got us, and we got them, so does that make it even?

Not only would WVU joining the SEC spice things up in basketball and give Kentucky a good, credible rival just down the road, but their football history isn’t too shabby either. West Virginia is one of the few schools in Big East football that has tried to keep that league credible. Let’s be honest, Rutgers, UConn and Syracuse aren’t exactly world beaters, then you add the Kragthorpe years to Louisville and the conference is darn near pathetic. Losing WVU would be a HUGE hit to the Big East and a good gain by the SEC.

If it happens, and the Mountaineers join the SEC, I firmly believe that the UK/WVU rivalry will be one of the top five in the nation. Separated by just over 300 miles, each season would bring some of the most passionate fans and great, down to the wire games that neither fanbase will ever forget. I hope it happens, and I look forward to the future…what say you BBN?
