Okay, I can already tell that this Starting Five thing isn’t going to be a lasting post. What happens when basketball season ends? Then what, “Starting Nine” for baseball? Don’t think so…
So, we will get four or five more of these and then I’ll come up with something a little more original, but for now…

1. National Signing Day: The biggest day of the year for college football has officially ended, and for me, it was truly painful. By the end of the day, the Cats had inked 26 players, including one 4 star in Zach West from Lexington. What did Kentucky lose? Two high profile in-state recruits including one that was verbally committed to the Cats. Lamar Dawson, Mr Kentucky Football, decided to take his talents to the West Coast and put them to good use at USC. Jon Davis, the previous UK verbal commit, decided to shun the Cats and go to the Big 10. 11, 12, heck, whatever they are, at Illinois. Another signing day and even though many say I should be excited about the class, truthfully, they will have to prove their worth to me. I am a big believer in the rankings system and from what I’ve seen, the Cats appear to be ranked at number 11 in the SEC, right above….
2. The Road: Kentucky continues to struggle to find a way to win away from the friendly confines of Rupp. When are the three upperclassmen going to step up? Miller, Liggins and Harrellson have got to lead the way for this young team. Calipari knows it, heck he’s the one who continues to point it out.
The comeback against Ole Miss didn’t come through the Juniors or Senior, it was the Freshman class that paved the way, scoring every Kentucky point of the second half. Knight – 10, Lamb – 13, Jones – 11. Calipari, “We cant go on the road and expect Freshmen to carry us. Two played well and one didn’t play particularly well. We didn’t get enough from the upper classmen.” Understatement… But I do have hope, hope that this team will find it’s groove at the right time…
3. Reunited, And It Feels So Good: On Friday, February 18th, three Kentucky Wildcats from the 09-10 team will reunite for one night only. Eric Bledsoe, DeMarcus Cousins and John Wall have all been selected as members of the Rookie Team in the 2011 T-Mobile Rookie Challenge set for the week of the NBA All-Star game. Get your 09-10 gear out and mark this one on your calendar. Bledose to Cousins. Wall to Bledsoe. Ring any bells? Game tips at 9:00 p.m. ET and will be carried on TNT.
4. Orange Crushed: For the University of Tennessee, violations is starting to validate the color of their uniforms. Bruce Pearl is sitting at home for the first eight SEC games, returning next week when UT comes to Rupp to face the Cats. (Don’t tell me that wasn’t planned) Now the NCAA is apparently about to slam the door to their investigation into some improper actions taken by Kiffen and the Volunteer football program. Here’s what being reported.
The NCAA will cite the University of Tennessee’s football program with a failure to monitor a violation stemming from the short tenure of former head coach Lane Kiffin, multiple sources close to the investigation both inside and outside the university told FanHouse.
5. Michael Gilchrist: ESPN says “The kid is a winner with the disposition to dominate and does the dirty work that leads to championships.”
Scout thinks Gilchrist is “One of the few guys you can see ticketed for stardom.”
Rivals believes “Gilchrist is an intriguing prospect with a lot of upside.”
Me, I think he can stick his head inside the rim… Enjoy!!!
