What does March Madness mean to you? Do you have visions of Tony Delk and Cameron Mills dancing in your head? Do you wake up each morning like a kid on Christmas waiting to see what the NCAA Fairy has in store for you? Before a game starts do you get that tingle in your stomach, the one that simulates nerves, fear and excitement all in one?
March madness is considered a holiday season for the big blue nation, and probably their favorite holiday of all. Final Fours are like presents under the tree wrapped in paper that says “Do not open until March 31[SUP]st[/SUP].” The national championship banner is the best gift of all and one that the blue clad faithful ask Santa for each and every year.
There is a certain feeling during this time of year as the temperatures rise and the flowers begin to bloom. Kentucky fans shell out dollars like it is nothing to follow their favorite team around the country. Fans flood cities, hotels and bars, boosting the economy one game at a time. While the other 60+ teams in the tournament cheer for the Wildcats to lose, all tournament cities cheer for them to win, because no one knows how to support a team like the nation of blue.
This year the Wildcats have a fierce 7-man lineup that can more than rival any team vying for the championship. The cool, calm and collected manner this team puts on game in and game out proves that these kids are wise beyond their years.
A perfect storm has been brewing in the bluegrass for sixteen long years now and the trophy is ready to return home. Everything is lined up and in place for these calm Cats to make a charge back to New Orleans and return home with the ‘ship. I could feel it in 1996 and 1998, as the magic setup for numbers 6 and 7 to come home to Lexington……and I feel it now. The journey starts Thursday, this team is ready, conditioned and focused on the goal: Number 8.
