Rumors have been swirling for a while about UConn head coach Jim Calhoun contemplating retirement since his recent national championship. And with the caliber of recruit that UConn attracts, it would have a domino affect throughout Division I if Coach Calhoun should step down. A Connecticut site posted an article today stating that 2012 4-star SG Omar Calhoun out of Brooklyn is leaning toward a commitment to UConn – unless Coach Calhoun retires (Calhoun is also considering UK).
The “coaching carousel” hits its apex immediately following the season, but it can have a huge effect on recruits at any time. Even recent transfer Ryan Harrow left NC State due to a coaching change (Sidney Lowe getting fired). And 5-star 2012 SF Justin Anderson recently de-committed from Maryland and signed with Virginia due to the retirement of Terps head coach Gary Williams.
Don’t think because we’re in the off-season that the coaching carousel is not in full effect. College basketball never stops.
