We said it here first, that Selby would be declared eligible by the NCAA. The NCAA ruled yesterday that he must sit out nine regular season games and repay $5,757.58 in impermissible benefits to the charity of his choice. Is this unfair to Enes Kanter? Is the NCAA a bunch of Kentucky-haters? Not yet. The NCAA originally declared Selby ineligible just like Kanter, but Selby’s recent reinstatement was the result of an appeal to the NCAA reinstatement committee (a separate committee made up of University staff members). In fact, the reinstatement committee has a very high rate of declaring ineligible players eligible again (like Memphis’ Will Barton). Kanter’s appeal is supposed to be made this week, so we’ll have to watch for the outcome. I’ll reserve my comments on the fairness of it all until after the NCAA reinstatement committee renders its decision on Kanter. If they let him play, the fairness questions should cease. If they don’t, they will have proven what UK fans already believe.
