NOB Recruiting Journal: Perry Ellis (Jan. 21st)

Perry Ellis (Class of 2012, Wichita Heights, Kan.) recently cut his list to six teams, which includes Kentucky, along with Kansas, Oklahoma, Memphis, Wichita State, and Kansas State.
Perry has also agreed to cooperate with us and do a recruiting journal.

Here is his first entry, with many more to come!

Hello Lexington! I grew up liking basketball, and I played on a competitive team starting at age 5. I always liked to dunk at a young age. When I had just turned 7 I had my first dunk in a game; it was on a 6 ½ foot goal. I remember that day very clearly we were playing in a Biddy Basketball League game and we were winning by a lot so my coach Steve Young (who is still my AAU coach today) told me to dunk. So, I did and I made it but got a technical because it wasn’t allowed. But it was worth it. Everyone was going crazy in the gym, including my mom who was trying to video the game. I could dunk on a 10 foot goal in 7[SUP]th[/SUP] grade but didn’t dunk in a middle school game until my 8[SUP]th[/SUP] grade year.

We were 28-0 my 7[SUP]th[/SUP] and 8[SUP]th[/SUP] grade years. So, I wanted to carry that winning streak on into high school. My goal as a freshman was to win the City League and to win State. We went 24-1, won the City League, and were the Kansas 6A State Champs. It had been 32 years since the Wichita Heights boy’s basketball team won a state championship. It was in 1977 when Antoine Carr and Darnell Valentine played for Heights. My sophomore year I wanted to go undefeated, win the City League and win State back to back. Well, we did everything but go undefeated. My sister won back-to-back state titles at Heights and I wanted to at least do the same as her.

This season I would really like to go undefeated, which is something I haven’t done yet in High School. I want to win the City League and Win State for a third time. I am averaging 21 points a game 7 rebounds. The record I am working on breaking is the number of dunks in a season. I have 25 dunks right now this season in 8 games, averaging 3 dunks per game. I am ahead of my pace from last season on dunks so hopefully I can do it this year.

Kentucky is on my trimmed list. I don’t have my top 6 in order yet, but Kentucky is definitely one I am seriously looking at. I have gotten to know Coach Cal, first at Memphis because my sister plays for the women’s team. So, we have known each other for several years now. I like the way he has developed players and has gotten them to play at a higher level. He has motivated them and pushed them to be the best they can be.

I am planning to attend the Kansas vs. Kansas State game on Jan 29[SUP]th[/SUP] in Lawrence; and Feb 19[SUP]th[/SUP] attend a game in Manhattan when Kansas State takes on Oklahoma; and in Norman on Feb 26[SUP]th[/SUP] when Oklahoma takes on Kansas. It is really hard to travel too far during the season. I am glad I got to see Kentucky play before my season got started.

We will be playing in the McPherson Tournament Jan. 20-22. We played in this tournament when I was a freshman. We lost our first and only game in that tournament. So I would really like to make it to the championship game this year. Our team is really playing well right now. We played Friday night and won 90-34. Everyone scored that game. Our team had a total of 8 dunks it was a lot of fun.

Until next time Cats fans, see ya!

In Perry’s first game of the McPherson Tournament on Thursday, he scored 21 points and seven rebounds in a 78-59 win over Lawrence Free State. Next up will be Maize High School.

Thanks for the journal Perry!
