The Eastern Kentucky Drillers enter their first playoffs hosting the Huntington Hammer at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville, Kentucky tonight.
[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]The Huntington Hammer are led by quarterback Martavious Young who ran for three touchdowns last week as Huntington secured the final Ultimate Indoor Football League playoff berth with a 49-25 victory over Saginaw.
David Jones is aware of Young and knows it will be a challenge to contain him.
“Their quarterback(Young) is athletic as all get out,” said Jones. “He reminds me alot of Curtis Pulley while he was at Kentucky.”
“It will be hard for us, they have improved a lot since the first and second time we played them.”
Drillers’ Safety Marcus McClinton also knows it will be a challenge.
“They definitely aren’t going to be a pushover,” McClinton said. “After watching the tape, they have several very good athletes carrying their team.” “Their quarterback, running back, and wide receiver are tough.”
Marcus and David are both looking forward to playing in front of the home crowd and how loud the Expo can be tonight.
“I think the louder our crowd is the better chance we have to win,” said David. “Everyone knows we have the loudest crowd in the UIFL.”
This will also be the first complete game back for former EKU QB Al Holland. Holland has been out for several weeks with a high ankle sprain.
David Jones is really excited to have Holland back behind center.
“It will be an extra boost to have Al back on the field,” Jones said. “He is an offensive coordinator on the field, and I am sure the offense will be 100% since he is back.”
There are 3 University of Kentucky players on the Drillers’ roster(Jones, McClinton, and Ellery Moore), and they are planning a little surprise for the fans tonight.
Both McClinton and Jones said that all the ex-UK players will wear their old college helmets during introductions and warmups.
Also, Marcus will be singing the national anthem before the game.
