This year will bring one lone 4-year senior (and one other senior in Eloy) to the table as Darius Miller announced via twitter that today is the official start of his senior year of college. As a college graduate myself I know that is a surreal moment. Knowing that you have one more year to goof around, be a “kid” before the realities of life come crashing down on you. Though this outlook may not be exactly the same for Miller, once the year is over he will still have business to take care of. Whether his path is in basketball or down another avenue, it will be time to put on the big boy pants and get to work.
Not only will Darius be the influential senior leader on the 2011-2012 Kentucky basketball squad, but he will do so after overcoming one of the hardest trials in sports: no self confidence. After Billy Gillespie was let go of his duties as head men’s basketball coach for the big blue, he didn’t leave without a few parting gifts, one of those being the confidence of several players, and unfortunately, Miller seemed to fall victim.
With all of the components available to become one of the most talented and skilled basketball players ever for the Kentucky Wildcats, the natural aggression and decision making seemed to be lacking. The fans seemed to get restless, with it being hard to understand why such a talented player couldn’t put all of the pieces together.
Over the last couple of years we have witnessed Miller just “mix in” with the other superstars on the team, almost content with taking the supporting role. As last season progressed and heading into the SEC tournament, Miller started to step up. He broke out in the SEC tournament to become the Wildcat we knew he could be and bring home the tournament MVP.
That is the Darius we know and love, one that refuses to lose and is willing to lead his team to victory. Senior leadership is huge, especially on a team looking to make a national championship run, and this year in his last season; Darius Miller will lead his teammate to the title.
