He’s arguably the top football recruit in the state of Kentucky for the 2012 season. By most accounts, he is the top defensive player for this upcoming season. Joker Phillips, in his continuing quest to recruit the city of Louisville, cannot afford to let another top in-state recruit slip away. Will Daniel Ross be the next star defensive lineman to say yes to the Cats?
There are plenty of services and media outlets that like to rank the senior football players within the Commonwealth, and it would be very difficult for you find one that does not have Jeffersontown (KY) defensive end Daniel Ross in their top 2. With his size, Ross is built more like an interior lineman on the defensive front. But his speed is good enough to let him play on the outside, and even move sometimes to the linebacker position.
The 6-foot-5, 285-pound Ross was the second leading tackler on his team, and had numbers that were impressive enough to get an early offer from Phillip’s and the Cats. That offer came during his junior year, and Ross has been saying that UK is his leader from day one. He’s been to the UK campus for several games, and has camped in Lexington more than once.
“The only camp I’ve been to this year is the Kentucky one,” Ross said, “and it went great. They were very impressed with me. The relationship is great. I talk with them about two or three times a week, just to see what’s going on with the program. I talk with (UK assistant) Coach (David) Turner and Coach Phillips often.
“Kentucky has a great atmosphere, their coaching staff is real cool and easy to talk to, and I just like it there.”
But Ross is not through looking at schools just yet. “I plan on making a couple of more camps before the summer is over. I haven’t made up my mind which ones I’m going to, but I have been invited to several campuses.”
The Kentucky offer is the only one that has been extended to him thus far, but several schools had their interest spurred after UK did. Ross said that Louisville, Illinois, Indiana, and Nebraska have contacted him several times this summer. And he is expected to make a visit to Central Florida before school starts.
