Ok so yesterday Drummond made a decision on where he will be attending school next year, with considerable buzz around him. People where wondering would he enroll early at Duke or Uconn? In the end he decided to play at …. wait for it… William and Monson Prep (what?)
Seriously, the kid has skills, but the decision to go to another year of prep school because his best friend, Kris Dunn is going, is just really really upsetting. It also won’t help critics (and I’m a huge one) believe that he can show up every game just because he’ll be dunking on some poor schmuck half his size in New England next year. Nice.
Now that I got my rant out of the way, here’s five reasons why Andre Drummond should join the Wildcats, and unfortunately, five reasons he won’t.
Five Reasons to join UK
1. Exposure- I understand that he want’s to go to the NBA, and that’s great. But why not do himself a favor and dominate the college competition in the most well known gym in the country? Oh and UK is the number one school in college basketball history pretty much.
2. Teammates- Ok so barring a miracle Kris Dunn won’t be coming to UK, so he loses his best bud. Still there’s a always going to be an amazing collection of talent in Lexington. Ever hear of Ryan Harrow? Uhh yea he’s kind of good, and he would only start if All American Marcus Teague is a one and done. Not to mention the potential frontcourt of first team all Americans.
3. One and done- Ok so this is kind of harping on my first point but you can’t argue with coach Cal’s track record. The guy has produced more first round picks in the past two years then the C-USA,CAA,and A-10 combined. Those are arguably the best three mid major conferences in the country.
4. Coaching Staff- Besides coach’s tremendous track record of getting guys in the league, Cal has a gift for developing players. Did anyone think Jorts would be an NBA guy before last season? Because if you did your insane. Not knocking Josh, but he’s the perfect example of UK’s development
5. Fans- The Big Blue Nation is crazy for basketball, and I mean certifiably nuts. Nothing matters in Kentucky more than basketball and if he can’t be moved by the passion of the fan base and love it there, well he’s a seven foot monster with no emotions. Just thinking about how UK fans act make me excited for next season. Best fan base in the country for any sport bar none.
Five Reasons He won’t come
1.Kris Dunn- Sorry everyone, but it seems Dunn has a lot to do with what happens with the big man, and with the addition of Harrow it’s tough to see Kris becoming a member of the Wildcats.
2.NBA- Most people think that after prep school Drummond will go into the draft (MISTAKE) and be drafted pretty high, maybe even first overall. History shows that there have been a lot more busts coming out of high school than Kobe and Amare’s of the world. I see Drummond as the next Kwame Brown, which is funny because the Bobcats will tank and Jordan will draft another underachieving big man.
3. Immaturity- This is one of the biggest knocks on Andre, and from watching him play it’s easy to see how much of a kid he still is. I don’t think he’s ready to be in the spotlight, which he most certainly would be at UK.
4. Other Schools- There is a slight possibility that he ends up on a college campus next fall, if he does, and plays well, I will be the first in line to apologize. Georgetown, Duke, and Uconn are all involved as well, and it would be foolish to count any of them out.
5. Fans- It might seem stupid but Andre seems to shy away from publicity, which he would get a ton of if he came to Kentucky. He says he’s trying to be a normal kid still, and let’s be honest that’s just not possible if you’re a Wildcat. Players are Stars and Drummond might not want the treatment that comes with it
