LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky outside linebacker Sam Greene has been named a comeback player of the week for his performance in the Wildcats’ 35-34 overtime victory over LSU, the College Sports Communicators have announced. Each week three offensive and three defensive players are honored.

Greene, a 6-foot-2, 251-pound senior from Washington, D.C., made five tackles against the Tigers, including 1.5 sacks of LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt.

Greene has had a sensational start to the season after spending much of his offseason rehabilitating from a major knee injury that landed him on the preseason comeback player of the year award watch list. He was named Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week for UK’s victory at Texas A&M and has routinely produced game-changing plays in critical moments.

For the season, Greene has totaled 22 tackles, two tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, one interception, one pass breakup and one quarterback hurry. In addition, he has routinely disrupted the opposing offense in critical moments, such as a crucial fourth-down stop in the upset at Texas A&M.

In UK’s win at South Carolina, Greene made six tackles, caused a pair of fumbles and had a quarterback hurry to help the Cats to their largest comeback victory on the road in league play in program history. Trailing 17-0 in the second quarter, he completely changed the game’s momentum by pulling loose a fumble that was recovered by Kentucky. It set in motion a touchdown drive that sparked the comeback.

Since 2018, the award has recognized college football student-athletes for overcoming injury, illness, or other circumstances. At the conclusion of each season, in a vote by a panel of college football writers, editors and sports information directors, three college football student-athletes are honored at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.
