What a great day in the bluegrass. Keeneland is open, the weather is amazing and we have a 7pm football game at Commonwealth Stadium. If you’re not going to the track, you probably already have your tailgating gear already packed. Yes it will be a great day; but how much better would today be if UK defeated Alabama tonight?
I know, Alabama is the two time defending national champs and it doesn’t look like anything will stop them. However, if we were to pull off the largest upset in the history of UK Football, wouldn’t you want to be there?
I remember walking into the Commonwealth when UK was hosting then #1 LSU. The band was playing and fans were doing the “C-A-T-S” cheer. That’s when I overheard an LSU fan that happened to be walking beside me, he said under his breath,”It’s more like Tiger bait”!
No one gave us a chance in that game and tonight is not any different. Yes I know the Andre Woodson, Stevie Johnson, Rafael Little, and Keenan Burton are not walking through that door. However, after seeing a confident Whitlow play on the road last week, something keeps telling me this is going to be closer than everyone thinks.
My head tells me we don’t have a prayer in pulling this off, but my heart keeps telling me to give this game another chance.
What’s going against us:
- All of our playmakers are Freshman.
- Alabama is the #1 team in the country.
- We’ve struggles most of the year on offense.
- Keeneland may keep fans from making the trip to Commonwealth.
- Alabama is…Alabama
What’s going in our favor:
- All of our playmakers are Freshman – A “losing culture” is foreign to them. There’s a reason why this team hasn’t stopped playing, it’s because they truly believe they always have a shot to win.
- One QB – Now that we’ve settled on one QB, it seems Whitlow is playing with confidence. His performance at USC last week is just what’s needed to pull this thing off.
- AJ McCarron isn’t as mobile as USC’s Conner Shaw – We did well against Bridgewater earlier in the season. If the Defense can pull off a similar performance, It will at least put the game in the hands of the offense (and that could make this a negative.
- It’s UK Football, and we always have HOPE! It’s the one thing you have before Kickoff and you pray that it doesn’t slip away before the end of the first quarter.
So what do you think? Is this a game that will be played out just as the analyst predict, or will something magical be floating in the air at Commonwealth (and I’m not referring to the smell of Kettle Korn).
If you’re still not feeling it, here’s a video for a little inspiration.
