A new UK Wildcats Basketball Season is just around the corner and with it comes new faces to the team. After losing 7 players from last year’s incredible season, Coach Calipari was able to bring in the #1 recruiting class again to start to rebuild.
Isaac Humphries, the laid-back 7 footer from Australia, is one of the many new additions to the team this season.
But Humphries passion wasn’t always basketball, and once he got on UK Campus he was on a mission.
This mission didn’t take him to the Joe Craft Center, but instead to the UK music department, where he was searching for a piano.
The recent travel and annoyance of getting settled into school took away from his practice time, so he was looking for a muscial outlet to clear his mind.
His muscial aspirations all started when he was 5 years old when his older sister was a dancer.
While he never got into the dancing, he did pick up playing music and singing.
“I remember going to a school near my house and it didn’t offer any kind of music stuff,” Humphries said. “I didn’t even know I liked it, but apparently I did. So, my mom moved me to a different school, kind of a performing arts elementary school.”
During this time he was a self proclaimed “normal-sized human” and began to do plays such as “Oliver” and “The King and I”
“I think I was better at singing,” he said. “Acting kind of comes with it, but if you don’t do it enough you get kind of embarrassed and it’s kind of weird. Singing just came so naturally. I’ve never really had a singing lesson in my life. I guess I’m pretty good. I think I do alright for how little preparing I’ve had.”
But being 7-foot with great skill led to big things in basketball, which has led him to Kentucky’s 2015-16 roster.
During the 2014 FIBA U-17 World Championship, he guided Australia to the finals against the USA while averaging 18.9 points, 11.6 rebounds and 3.3 blocks in seven games.
Humphries adds great excitement for UK Basketball this season, along with the rest of the class. I know I can’t wait for Big Blue Madness and see him wearing KENTUCKY proudly across his chest!
