Old Dominion defeated Western Kentucky 37-34 last night, but the final score doesn’t explain the bizarre fashion by which the Hilltoppers lost.

With the game tied 27-27 and just 1:38 to play, WKU scored a touchdown to go up 34-27.
Old Dominion then marched right down the field with a series of long passes to tie the game with only 9 seconds to go in regulation.
Western then threw a long incomplete pass but ODU was whistled for roughing the passer, which set the Hilltoppers up for a long field goal attempt. The field goal was well short but Old Dominion had 12 players on the field which moved the ball closer and gave WKU another attempt.
On the second attempt, Old Dominion put a return man back. The field goal was way short and the ball was returned into WKU’s red zone, but time expired. Unfortunately for the Hilltoppers, the officials spotted a face mask against them on the return.
Old Dominion was allowed to run one play with no time on the clock. They used the play to kick a short, game-winning field goal.
The loss drops Western Kentucky to 1-6 on the season.
