According to a report from Courier & Press, former Kentucky player Walter McCarty is one of five finalists for the head coaching job at Evansville.
McCarty is currently an assistant with the Boston Celtics.
The report says the five finalists are McCarty, Travis Steele (Xavier assistant), Calbert Cheaney (former IU player), Greg Gary (Purdue assistant) and David Ragland (Valpo assistant).
Here’s an excerpt:
Walter McCarty, assistant coach, Boston Celtics
Like Cheaney, he’s another former first-round NBA Draft pick who graduated from Harrison High School.
The main difference in the public eye is that McCarty went to rival Kentucky and not IU. Wildcats fans would love him, but there doesn’t seem to be much crossover between UE and UK. These things, however trivial, matter when it comes to selling season tickets.
McCarty has a strong coaching resume, though. He’s spent the last seven seasons in the NBA – the first two with the Indiana Pacers and the last five with the Boston Celtics under former Butler coach Brad Stevens. Prior to that, he was on Rick Pitino’s bench for three years at Louisville.
He could be right up there with Cheaney, especially if he’s saying the right things. His interview with Spencer is expected to take place Wednesday.
