Trinity Wins 6A State Championship, UK Commit Walker Wood Suffers Knee Injury

Trinity overwhelmed Lafayette 56-21 to secure Kentucky’s Class 6A state championship Saturday night.

The game was marred by 31 flags and a great deal of chippy play.

Lafayette quarterback Walker Wood, who is committed to Kentucky, was injured on a late hit.

Wood left the game with what appeared to be a knee injury.

According to reports from Josh Moore of the Herald-Leader, Trinity fans then chanted “where is Walker? Where is Walker?”

Lafayette refused to shake hands after the game and one player even appeared to slap a referee’s hat off.

Update: The severity of Wood’s knee injury is unknown. Here are more details from the Herald-Leader:

Wood, a University of Kentucky commit, was walking on crutches and had a brace on his right knee after the game but the severity of his injury was not known. He rushed for 42 yards and a TD and finished 13-for-17 for 181 yards and a touchdown with an interception.

Coach Eric Shaw sympathized with his players’ emotions following Wood’s departure. Lafayette elected not to participate in the post-game handshake line after the game.

“That’s hard to see your brother go down like that, late or a legal hit” Shaw said. “That’s how much they love one another.”

Trinity received 17 penalties for 186 yards; Lafayette was flagged 14 times for 140 yards.
