There will be a Kentucky connection for one Commodore when UK plays Vanderbilt on Saturday. Frank Kornet graduated from Lexington Catholic High School. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2nd round (30th overall) of the 1989 NBA Draft. His son Luke didn’t have a single Div. I offer until a growth spurt changed everything. He grew seven inches in his senior season and then two more after arriving on campus.
During his freshman and sophomore years of high school, Kornet measured around 6-foot-2 and generally played as a shooting guard. However, by the end of his senior year at Liberty Christian School, a growth spurt left him standing 6-foot-10. Kornet quickly became one of the centers for his team and averaged 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots during his senior season.
After the growth spurt and impressive performances on the Texas AAU circuit, Kornet began getting attention from schools such as Vandy, Kansas State, TCU and Purdue. Kornet chose Vanderbilt where his father played from 1985-89 and was named all-SEC during his senior year.
“Some people do remember my dad … (but) I’m a very different player than he was.” Kornet said. “I don’t really feel any of the pressure. I’m just going to go out and play the way I play.”
