The #6 UK Hoops(1-1) hosts High Point(1-1) today at Memorial Coliseum at 1pm.
Lets take a look at the story behind the game:
Kentucky and High Point are meeting for just the second time in school history. The Wildcats
defeated the Panthers in their lone matchup, 83-45, on Jan. 6, 2004.
High Point is 1-1 after a season-opening win (85-76) over East Tennessee State and a two-point loss(64-62) at Furman on Tuesday. Redshirt-sophomore Stacia Robertson and junior Tayler Tremblay led with 13 points apiece vs. Furman, while junior center Cheyenne Parker grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
UK’s first road trip of the season wasn’t a very pleasant experience as the Wildcats dropped an 85-51 decision to top-ranked Baylor. It didn’t help that UK shot its lowest shooting percentage since 2008, netting 27.1 percent from the field. Baylor, along with 6-foot-8 All-American and last season’s National Player of the Year Brittney Griner, dominated the Wildcats in the paint, outscoring UK 60-16 and winning the battle on the boards, 53-35. Griner finished with 27 points, eight rebounds and five blocks.
Overall, Cheyenne Parker, a 6-4 center, leads the Panthers in scoring and rebounding with an impressive 18.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. She was the Big South Defensive Player of the Year last season after setting the Big South single-season record for rebounds (403) and blocked shots (121).
Kentucky is 9-1 all-time vs. teams from the current alignment of High Point’s Big South Conference. The lone loss came in 1998 vs. Liberty in Memorial Coliseum (80-76).
The Cats are 49-2 at home over the last three seasons (including one game in Rupp Arena).
UK is 33-16 in the Matthew Michell era in bounce-back games or games following a loss.
DeUnna Hendrix is in her first year as the head coach at High Point after serving as an assistant coach on the staff last season. Prior to High Point, she spent four seasons as an assistant at Jacksonville University. Hendrix played at the University of Richmond under Coach Joanne Boyle.
