The Sporting News Slams Arkansas Fans for Negative Comments about Malik Monk

The Sporting News’ Kami Mattioli has written an open letter to Arkansas fans about they way they acted after Malik Monk decided to play college basketball at the University of Kentucky.

Here is an excerpt from the letter Mattioli wrote and put Razorback fans back in their place.

Let’s keep it real here, Arkansas fanatics: Malik Monk owes you nothing. He does not owe you his college career. He does not owe you a commitment to the hometown program. He does not even owe you a thank you for your support, but he gave that to you on Twitter because he’s a courteous kid.

How about, instead of being bitter about a 17-year-old young man’s choice, you recognize and appreciate that because of guys like Monk and Bobby Portis, the state of Arkansas is a place where such high-caliber talent is cultivated? How about you recognize that that’s something to be proud of, whether those top prospects choose the hometown program or opt to spread their wings?

Angry Arkansas fans, I don’t know Malik Monk, but I’d guess that your harassing Tweets wishing for the moment his “life comes crashing down,” among various other threats, only helped make him more sure about his decision to leave.

It always looks really high class when supposed adults trash a teenager for making a choice to go to college.
