The NCAA has decided to make changes to the postseason NIT tournament, starting in 2024.
The most significant change is that conference regular season championship that do not win their conference tournament or are not otherwise selected to the NCAA Tournament will not receive an automatic bid to the NIT. Instead, two teams from high-major conference teams (SEC, ACC, Big Ten, etc.) that are not selected for the NCAA Tourney will be given spots in the NIT based on NET Rankings.
For example, if Morehead State wins the OVC but loses in the OVC Tournament, the Eagles will likely no longer earn an invite to the NIT. Instead, a Vanderbilt team that is 17-15 might get in. In other words, the NCAA is sticking it to mid-major schools yet again.
