St. John’s Outlasts Taylor County for King of the Bluegrass Championship; Thoughts on Tournament

St. John’s of Washington, D.C. held off Taylor County to win the King of the Bluegrass Championship by a score of 59-56.

The Cadets were led in scoring by Anthony Cowan Jr’s 18 points. Jeffrey Dowtin finished with 12 points.

Taylor County’s Brandon Berry had 25 points and 11 rebounds in the game, with 19 of those points coming in the 1st quarter.

Quentin Goodin ended up with 16 points on the evening.

The All-tournament team:

Anthony Cowan, Jeffrey Dowtin (St. John’s); David Sloan, Quentin Goodin (Taylor County); Dujuanta Weaver (Doss); Tyger Campbell, Braxton Blackwell (Christ Presbyterian); Aric Holman, Justin Miller (Owensboro); Drew McDonald (Newport Central Catholic); Jalen Perry (Ballard); Tyler Sharpe (Bullitt East); James Bolden (Holmes); Trey Blevins (Wayne County).

Bob White MVP: Anthony Cowan (St. John’s).

Ralph Beard Spirit Award: Peyton Woods (Wayne County).

The game wasn’t without its pageantry, as the team’s took the floor to a smoke machine and the call to the post by the Churchill Downs bugler:

The bugler also played the national anthem:

My thoughts: It was a great day of basketball at Fairdale and the King of the Bluegrass will be on my schedule for now on.

The main attraction for me was to watch Quentin Goodin for Taylor County and I came away being a little undecided on him. I expected him to be a better shooter, but he finished only 0-2 from behind the arc. He looked like a mid-size wing that is very athletic and does a nice job of going to the basket, but a point guard he is not.

A couple of other standouts for me on the last day were Ballard’s Jalen Perry and Christ Presbyterian’s 8th grader Tyger Campbell.

Perry has a very nice shot and seems to want the ball when his team needs a basket. Ballard was down 13 to Newport Catholic and it was Jalen’s big plays that put the Bruins over the top.

On a lighter note, I couldn’t help but notice several people around the gym looking like movie and tv characters.

Take a look at the faux celebrities:

You never know what will happen and who you will see at a Kentucky high school basketball Christmas tournament and one of the best you can go to is the King of the Bluegrass at Fairdale High School.
