Several with Kentucky Ties Possible Candidates for Southern Miss Vacancy

Former Morehead State and Southern Miss head coach Donnie Tyndall continued climbing the coaching ladder this past week as he was named the new boss  at Tennessee.

This has left another spot on the coaching carousel to be filled and it sounds like several coaches in Kentucky could find their way to Hattiesburg to fill the head job at Southern Miss.

The Sun-Herald is reporting that Kentucky assistant coach Kenny Payne and Morehead State head coach Sean Woods are interested in the opening.

Woods, who has more wins than anyone in Morehead State history in his first 2 seasons, also took Mississippi Valley State to the NCAA Tournament before his move to the Ohio Valley Conference. Woods was a finalist for the Southern Miss job the last time around before Tyndall was hired.

Other candidates mentioned are Florida assistant coach John Pelphrey, Eastern Kentucky’s Jeff Neubauer, Stephen F. Austin’s Underwood, and former Mississippi State head coach Rick Stansbury.
