St. John’s lost to Marquette 72-70 Thursday in the Big East Conference Tournament.
Immediately after the game, rumors began to swirl that it was likely Mike Anderson’s last game as head coach of the Red Storm.
There are already reports out that Rick Pitino has been linked to the St. John’s job and that both sides have “mutual interest.”
Here is an excerpt from Zach Braziller of the New York Post:
Asked whether or not he wants to be back, he said: “I look forward to this team, guys.”
Indications are the school will part ways with Anderson despite four years and up to $10 million remaining on his contract.
Iona College coach Rick Pitino is believed to be a realistic candidate.
There is mutual interest between the two parties, according to sources.
St. John’s president Rev. Brian Shanley nearly hired Pitino at Providence 12 years ago, prior to giving Ed Cooley the job, sources said.
In case you’re wondering, St. John’s is roughly 46 miles from Iona College.
Pitino has also been mentioned as a potential candidate at Georgetown:
Rick Pitino, head coach, Iona: Finally, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the biggest name on any coaching candidate list this season: One, Rick Pitino.
At this point, everyone knows the good and bad with Pitino: He is a guy who wins everywhere he goes, the ultimate program builder and put simply, one of the greatest coaches the sport of college basketball has ever seen. He also brings controversy as well, as he brought multiple NCAA scandals to Louisville.
Six years, and three coaches after his departure, Louisville still hasn’t recovered.
Meanwhile, Pitino just won his second straight MAAC regular season title at Iona. And is looking for his second tournament bid in three seasons.
The question: Does Georgetown want to deal with all the, umm, extra stuff, that comes with Pitino?
