Report: Walter McCarty Emerges as Leader for Evansville Job

Former Kentucky player Walter McCarty has reportedly emerged as the leader for the head coaching job at Evansville.

Here is the report:

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

That person is Walter McCarty, who has been an assistant under Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens since 2013.

He will fly in for the interview Wednesday. Six people were contacted to speak in general about the former University of Kentucky player and none responded – perhaps out of superstition or permission that wasn’t granted.

Any other interviews at this point are highly unlikely. One of the confirmed finalists, Travis Steele – the top assistant at Xavier – withdrew his name from consideration after rumors that Musketeers’ head coach Chris Mack may leave for the opening at Louisville.

McCarty was said to be “very, very impressive” in his phone interview and has references from some highly-regarded people in the coaching industry.

Sources say he would schedule the best opponents possible so his teams will be battle-tested. He has practices and drills ready and recruiting networks set up. He also wants to be publicly involved, which would be consistent with the charitable causes he has taken part of during his time in the NBA.
