UK Athletics invited the media to Commonwealth Stadium today for a tour of the facility and sneak peek at the renovations. With opening kickoff just 44 days away, construction crews are in a sprint to the finish. What struck me most was the massive size and complexity of the project. Getting all of the moving parts in sync, especially with the weather adding an additional challenge, is a daunting task.
Fans will enjoy the wider concourses and other amenities, but one of the standout features is the recruiting room and patio area. Wildcat hopefuls will be able to stand directly above the field as the players emerge, with an impressive view of the stadium and turf design. I have to admit I was skeptical of the field renderings, but seeing it in person is a different story. The colors pop and the stripes and checkerboard pattern add even more interest. Even with all of the dust and debris, it was exciting to stand in that spot and imagine the Cats running out of the tunnel for the first time.
While there is much left to be done, today’s tour offered a glimpse of the future and the new energy surrounding Kentucky football.
