Nike, Under Armour, and the Harrison Twins’ Decision

The thought for a while is the Harrison Twins will pick between Kentucky and Maryland when they finally made their announcement and that of course will be Thursday.

Many have thoughts of where they might end up and the reasons they might select Kentucky or Maryland, but one underlying theme has been the battle of the shoe companies.

Nike vs. Under Armour.

Kentucky is the Nike school and Maryland being with Under Armour.

Eric Prisbell of USA Today is releasing a story about the Harrison Twins recruitment and has published some interesting notes about that situation.

*Harrison Sr. told me college coaches not allowed to call his sons directly. Only person allowed to call them: one Under Armour official.

*I don’t know which way the decision will go. And I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, just providing a window into the world.

*The UA-Maryland relationship is a slippery slope, but not unlike the relationship between Nike and Adidas and some schools, with one catch. One prominent Nike-affiliated coach told me he recruits players off Adidas AAU teams but not any UA AAU teams because “You have no chance.”

*Harrison Sr. is a no-nonsense, blunt former military man. A good, decent family man. He has handled this circus about as well as anyone can.

*Nike officials are a bit anxious about this decision, I’m told. Even with Maryland’s in-home visit tomorrow, I still think coin flip.

I don’t know what you can take from this but there is definitely some interesting information about the battle between Nike and the up and coming Under Armour and how they rely on high school kids to be the future of their business.
