NCAA Rules Changes for Kentucky Basketball

College basketball is changing right in from of our eyes. Beginning in the 2015-16 season, the NCAA has adopted rules that will change the pace of the game and other small changes, but they’ll make big impacts. We won’t know until June 8th if the following rule changes are actually going to happen, but it’s looking good from this point.

The shot clock. We all know how many issues the shot clock causes. The NCAA has agreed to eliminate the 35-second shot clock and make it 30 seconds, changing a rule that was been around since the early 1990’s. Both the NBA and women’s college basketball already play with a 30-second shot clock. Welcome to the club, men’s basketball.

  • Here is a compiled list of other rule changes:

    1. Timeouts reduced from five to four. Only three can be carried into the second half.
    2. Enforce resumption of play out of timeouts.
    3. Team timeouts will become media timeouts if made within 30 seconds pro to a media timeout. Only exception being of the first team timeout in the second half.
    4. Enforce stricter defensive rules (granted the refs know their calls this year).
    5. Offensive players are provided with similar principles of verticality as defensive.
    6. Restricted-area arc moved from three feet out to four feet.
    7. Hanging on the rim technical foul is now only a one shot foul.
    8. Eliminate five-second calls.
    9. Allowance of pregame dunks in warm ups.
    10. 10-second backcourt timer will not reset after a timeout.
    11. Coaches cannot call live ball timeouts.
    12. Instant replays of shots after shot clock as expired are now allowed, even before the 2:00 mark.

  • These rules should be a good change for college basketball, close calls should no longer cost another team the game and the pace of the game should increase drastically.

At his media opp on Friday, John Calipari talked about changing the shot clock and NCAA rules about eligibility.
