Morehead State Plays Exhibition Tuesday Night with Asbury

The Morehead State Eagles open up Tuesday night in an in-state match up with the Asbury Eagles at 7pm in Johnson Arena.

It sounds like MSU head coach Sean Woods will have a lot to learn about his 2015-16 team with 8 newcomers joining the team this season.

Asbury is 2-0 this year, after recording two wins over the weekend in Nashville, Tenn. On Friday night, they downed Welch College, 87-54, and then beat Fisk University, 87-69, on Saturday. Last season, they went 20-11 before losing to Indiana University East in the semifinals of the KIAC Tournament.

Morehead State opens regular-season action at home on Nov. 13 against Cincinnati Christian.

The Eagles return two starters from last year’s team, including senior Brent Arrington, a preseason All-OVC selection, who averaged 11.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.9 steals last season. Arrington was the only player to start all 34 games for the Eagles last season. The other returning starter is junior Corban Collins, who played his first season at Morehead State last year after transferring from LSU.

Seniors Lyonell Gaines and Anthony Elechi also return after making a combined eight starts. Gaines posted four double-digit scoring games early in the season before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

MSU welcomes eight new players, including two true freshmen (Malik Maitland, Lamontray Harris) and six junior college transfers (Ty’Quan Bitting, Keion Alexander, DeJuan Marrero, Xavier Moon, Treshaad Williams, Ronnye Beamon).

Morehead State finished 17-17 a season ago, and 10-6 in the OVC. The squad advanced to the semifinals of the OVC Tournament before narrowly falling to Murray State.
