Mike DeCourcy of sportingnews.com has a good article this morning about John Calipari and his young Kentucky team, plus some good quotes from Jon Hood.
Here is an excerpt.
Calipari has been with the Wildcats for five seasons. As a result of Sunday afternoon’s 75-72 victory over No. 2 seed Michigan, this is his third Final Four as their coach. Each of those teams was distinctly different, only a few contributors blending from one team to the next. There have been but a few constant threads: Calipari, staffers John Robic, Orlando Antigua and Rod Strickland, and Hood, who has stayed with the program even though he did not develop into a regular player.
“If anybody was the coach at this place and had the ability to recruit like he does, you’d go get the best players, too,” Hood said. “And the best players deserve to play. So play the best players. And when it works … there’s always going to be the people that talk about it. But we’re here in the Final Four.
“I’m holding a Midwest Regional champion trophy. We started five freshmen who are great players. At one point, we played seven freshmen tonight. Who says it can’t be done? We’re back in the Final Four, so all the people who said it couldn’t be done, we’re here, and we’re going to try to make it happen again.”
