Kentucky suffers heartbreaking loss to No. 1 Georgia

Kentucky (1-2, 0-2 SEC) took a 9-6 lead into the fourth quarter last night against No. 1 Georgia.

Unfortunately, in the final stanza, the Bulldogs (3-0, 1-0 SEC) scored the game’s only touchdown. The Wildcats answered with another field goal and Georgia got out of Lexington with a 13-12 victory.

For Kentucky, there were some positive signs in the aftermath of last weekend’s disappointing 31-6 loss to South Carolina.

For starters, the Cats showed that they can be one of the top defenses in the Southeastern Conference, if not in college football. Brad White’s bunch stifled Georgia, holding the Bulldogs to just 63 yards in the first half.

Also, Demie Sumo-Karngbaye is difficult to spell without looking, but the Kentucky running back can flat out play. Sumo-Karngbaye carried the ball 22 times last night for a career-high 98 yards. Is it possible that he’s the best option even when Chip Trayanum returns from injury?

What about kicker Alex Raynor? He nailed four field goals last night, including one that was from a school record 55 yards away.

Quarterback Brock Vandagriff made one major mistake with a fumble against his former team, but he was able to contribute 114 yards in the air and 26 more on the ground.

Zion Childress and Ty Bryant led the Cats with six tackles each. Childress almost put Kentucky up 10-0 with an interception return for a touchdown early in the game. Officials reviewed it and ruled that it was an incomplete pass.

Kentucky has Georgia on the ropes in the first half if that touchdown stands.

The Wildcats will look to even their record next weekend against Ohio University (2-1).
