Kentucky women’s basketball senior guard Maddie Scherr has been invited to attend the 2023 USA Women’s AmeriCup Training Camp in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The training camp runs from June 22-24 and Scherr will be competing for one of the five remaining roster spots on the team.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Maddie Scherr, a University of Kentucky women’s basketball senior guard, has been invited to attend the 2023 USA Women’s AmeriCup Training Camp in Colorado Springs, Colorado, from June 22-24 to compete for one of the five remaining roster spots.
Eight players have already been selected to the 12-person roster, including Lauren Betts (Stanford), Rickea Jackson (Tennessee), Raven Johnson (South Carolina), Rayah Marshall (USC), Charisma Osborne (UCLA), Laila Phelia (Michigan), Angel Reese (LSU) and Jewel Spear (Wake Forest). Five players have been tabbed as finalists for the team, including Janiah Barker (Texas A&M), Makira Cook (Illinois), Abbey Hsu (Columbia), Chance Gray (Oregon) and Aneesah Morrow (LSU).
The finalists and additional invited players, including Scherr, will attend training camp as part of the final selection process.
All athletes are selected by the USA Basketball Women’s Junior National Team Committee.
Scherr is coming off a remarkable season as a junior at UK, playing and starting in 29 games in 2022-23. She averaged 11.6 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game, while adding a team-lead 125 assists (4.3 apg) and 32 blocks (1.1 bpg) and making 62 steals (2.1 spg).
Before the 2023 Southeastern Conference Tournament, Scherr concluded the regular season ranked fourth in the SEC in apg (4.2), fourth in the SEC in steals (55), fifth in the SEC in assists (110) and sixth in the SEC in spg (2.1). She also concluded the regular season as the SEC leader in free-throw percentage (91.8%).
The Wildcat shot 38.5 percent from the field (110-286) and a team-lead 33.6 percent from the arc (37-110) on the season. She doubled her offensive production from the nonconference schedule to the conference schedule, from 7.3 ppg in the nonconference season to 14.9 points per game in the conference season.
Scherr, a Florence, Kentucky, native, reset her career high in scoring four times this season, all against top-25 teams, including 18 vs. UofL, 22 vs. LSU, 25 vs. USC and 27 vs. Tennessee. Meanwhile, she scored in double digits 17 times in 2022-23, and she led Kentucky in assists in 19 games, in blocks in 12 games and in steals in 11 games.
The former Miss Kentucky Basketball set a new program record for most blocks in a SEC Tournament game in program history when she recorded six in Kentucky’s win against Alabama in the second round, while also adding 19 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals.
About 2023 USA Women’s AmeriCup Team
The 2023 USA Women’s AmeriCup Team is coached by Kamie Ethridge (Washington State University), Aaron Johnston (South Dakota State University) and Katrina Merriweather (University of Cincinnati).
The draw to determine two five-team preliminary groups for the 2023 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup was held May 10. The United States will face Argentina, Brazil, Cuba and Venezuela as part of Group A.
The U.S. opens pool play against Venezuela on July 1, followed by Argentina on July 2, Brazil on July 4 and Cuba on July 5. If the USA advances, quarterfinals are scheduled for July 7 followed by semifinals on July 8 and the medal games on July 9. Game times and broadcast information will be announced later.
Since the event’s inception in 1993, the United States has captured four AmeriCup gold medals, including titles in 2019 and 2021. In addition to the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela will participate in the 2023 FIBA AmeriCup.
