Kentucky Football Adds Grad Transfer to Help Quarterback Depth

Ever since Mark Stoops and his Kentucky Football program lost backup quarterback Gunnar Hoak they have been looking for some depth at the position.

It looks like Stoops and company may have found some help today.

Here is a little background information on Smith:

Smith, who played for former Kentucky player and assistant coach Neal Brown at Troy, started seven games and threw for 1,669 yards and 14 touchdowns with six interceptions last season after taking over for injured starter Kaleb Barker. He also ran for 191 yards and a score.

The Trojans finished their season 10-3 after defeating Buffalo 42-32 in the Dollar General Bowl. Smith was named the game’s MVP after throwing for 320 yards and four TDs with no interceptions.

“I’m really proud of Sawyer,” Brown said after the team’s bowl victory, according to a report by the Dothan Eagle. “He had his two best weeks of practice. It was the best he’s thrown the ball that I’ve seen in two years. He played his best game, and it wasn’t even close. I can’t say enough about him.”

Smith will be able to play immediately and have two seasons of eligibility remaining at UK.

Kentucky’s other quarterback options include Walker Wood, a sophomore who redshirted in 2017, and two scholarship freshmen, Amani Gilmore and Nik Scalzo. The Cats also have Kolbe Langhi, a sophomore walk-on out from Christian County.
