Kentucky head basketball coach John Calipari is going old school to try and improve his young Wildcats’ defense.
The change in officiating has fans and coaches alike groaning every time a foul is called as games have basically become free throw shooting contests.
John Calipari is one of the few that seems to like the new rule, especially since his team leads the country in going to the free throw line.
The new rule enforcement has still made Cal think differently about teaching defense and it has made him revert back to middle school.
“If you ever played, did you ever see when they used to tell you to put your hands behind your back and defend that way? That’s how we were all taught,” Cal told the media last night at his postgame presser. “They made you put your hands behind your back, both hands, defend the guy if he’s trying to go around you. The only thing you could do is move your feet. Guess what we’re going to do? We’re going back to that. You may say, ‘That’s seventh grade.’ I don’t really care.”
Cal went on to talk about how he is making his team do leg sits, which as you can tell, the players dread doing them everyday but understand why they are doing them.
It sounds like the defense better improve or there will be a lot of sore legs around the Wildcat Lodge during the holidays.
