Jerry Stackhouse views himself as a young John Calipari

Last night, after Vanderbilt’s 77-68 victory over LSU in the SEC Tournament, Vandy head coach Jerry Stackhouse made an interesting comparison for himself.

Stackhouse said he sees himself as a young John Calipari during Cal’s time at UMass.

On Thursday night, following Vandy’s 77-68 win over LSU that sets up tonight’s SEC Tournament quarterfinals meeting with Kentucky, I asked Stackhouse to elaborate on his relationship with Calipari. Turns out he compares himself to the young Calipari at UMass three decades ago.

“It’s just the respect for his longevity, his tenure. He’s one of those guys,” Stackhouse said. “I watched the ’30 for 30’ on him and I saw how he battled, how he cares about his players. Kind of changed my perspective on him a little bit just from watching that, digging a little deeper in it. You kind of see.”


“You hear noise all the time about people, but until you kind of dig deep and kind of pull the layers back a little bit. That was fun to see,” Stackhouse said. “I felt like I was in his shoes a little bit when he was playing John Chaney and those guys, trying to beat them. You know what I’m saying?”
