Harrison Twins, James Young, Karl Towns, ESPN & Sting Headline Kentucky NCAA Violations

ncaa

Kyle Tucker of the Courier Journal recently requested the list of NCAA violations by the University of Kentucky athletic program from July 2012 to June 28, 2013 and there were 12 total violations reported.

The violations were mostly self-reported and 3 of the violations kind of stood out which involved the Kentucky Basketball and Football programs.

These are all minor violations and should not produce any more repercussions.

Level II Secondary Violation (Occurred Dec. 15, 2012. Self-reported Jan. 6, 2013)
Violation of NCAA Bylaw 13.10.5 (publicizing a recruit’s campus visit): Jeremy Jarmon, assistant director of football operations under the last staff who was kept on by the new staff, and Leslie Ladd, a football office worker, “publicized a prospect while on campus for an official visit via their Twitter accounts.” Although the name is redacted, it’s clear the prospect was Steven Borden, a JUCO tight end who ultimately transferred to UK, whose father is professional wrestler Sting.

Level II Secondary Violation (Occurred June 2012. Self-reported Sept. 26, 2012)
Violation of NCAA Bylaw 13.11.1.14.1 (on-campus tryouts): After receiving a waiver to allow the Dominican Republic National Team, coached by UK’s John Calipari, to hold tryouts in the summer of 2011 on campus, Sandy Bell, executive associate AD for student services, believed it also applied in 2012. UK and Dominican assistant Orlando Antigua checked with Bell to be sure it was legal last summer because the participants included a prospect-aged individual (not named in the report, but clearly 2014 Cats commit and National Team member Karl Towns).

Level II Secondary Violation (Occurred Oct. 17 & 24, 2012. Reported to SEC’s Mike Slive Oct. 29, 2012)
Executive associate AD Sandy Bell sent a letter to Slive saying: “The University of Kentucky has been informed of the need to report a secondary violation of NCAA Bylaw 13.10.3 relative to the appearance of prospective student-athletes during an ESPN all-access series.” That bylaw forbids “a prospective student-athlete … be interviewed or otherwise involved (in person or via film, audio tape or videotape) on: a) A radio or television program conducted by the institution’s coach; b) A program in which the institution’s coach is participating; or c) A program for which a member of the institutions athletics staff has been instrumental in arranging for the appearance of the prospective student-athlete or coach or related program material.”
