In an interesting read today from Mark Inabinett on al.com, former Kentucky football coach Fran Curci sounds off on Kentucky football. He says Kentucky’s devotion to basketball and recruiting are to blame for Kentucky’s struggles.
Curci said Kentucky’s devotion to basketball played a part in the Wildcats’ recruiting difficulties: “(Tennesee coach) Johnny Majors would say (to prospective players), ‘I hear you want to go to Kentucky, and I wish you would. It’s a beautiful place. You’ll like it there. And I hope that when you’re there, you’ll look at where the basketball players live.'”
Curci went on to say he is not sure if Kentucky is willing to make a total commitment to the football program’s success.
“People haven’t yet accepted the fact that you have to have a commitment – a complete commitment – from the janitor to the school president,” Curci said.
With the hiring of Mark Stoops, his staff’s recruiting success and planned upgrades to Commonwealth Stadium, it appears the university is hoping to change this impression and erase any doubt about its support of the football program. Hopefully this will lead to success on the field, changing the culture of Kentucky football in the years to come.
