Former Louisville player Brian Bowen, who was a key piece in the firing of Rick Pitino and Tom Jurich, is transferring to South Carolina.
The Gamecocks will reportedly seek reinstatement for Bowen so he can join the team:
Bowen will likely have to sit out one year, per NCAA transfer rules, but his lawyer, Jason Setchen, said Wednesday he hoped Bowen would be cleared to play late this season.
“Brian is very excited to have a new opportunity to pursue basketball at South Carolina,” Setchen told Courier Journal. “We’re really appreciative that South Carolina has presented this opportunity to Brian. It’s unfortunate things didn’t work out for Brian in Louisville. I know he’s very fond of those people. He told me many times that he was very appreciative of how the fans and the people of the city of Louisville treated him.”
Brian Bowen: ‘I didn’t know anything’ about alleged payment to play for Louisville
Louisville never declared Bowen ineligible but the program withheld him from team activities, a source with knowledge of Bowen’s status told a Courier Journal reporter.
However, South Carolina may seek NCAA approval before playing Bowen anyway, and a tweet from Setchen’s account indicated the school may be pursuing that option.
“We have worked tirelessly for Brian Bowen to help him find his way back on the court,” the tweet said. “We are so grateful that (South) Carolina and Coach (Frank) Martin are seeking reinstatement and ultimately for giving him a chance to compete for a national championship.”
You’ll recall that former South Carolina assistant Lamont Evans was arrested and accused of taking bribes to steer players to certain agents. Evans was an assistant at Oklahoma State at the time of his arrest.
Frank Martin doesn’t care about the FBI.
