ESPN SportsNation: Chat with John Calipari

Kentucky coach John Calipari is in Bristol on the campus of ESPN promoting his new book. He took some time today to have a chat with fans.

Here is an excerpt from the chat.

Bluerupp (Kentucky)

As a college coach, is there anytime in the year when you can just relax?

John Calipari (1:35 PM)

May. After I have my hip surgery I’ll be down for about a month for the first time ever.

Marc (frankfort, ky)

Coach, what would you say is your biggest surprise about the overall UK basketball program that stands out to you, which you didn’t realize before you took the job ??

John Calipari (1:36 PM)

I knew the intensity of the program was high, but I never realized it was so high in all 50 states. I was in Buenes Aires and people were stopping me to tell me how much of a fan they were of the team.

Sam Hoyer (Roanoke)

Do you ever wish you could be at a school where the football team was as good as the basketball team? To maybe take a little of the media glare off? Or is it nice being the most successful team on campus?

John Calipari (1:37 PM)

Good question. There is probably about four programs where you can win in both basketball and football. Maybe four. My hope someday is Kentucky gets added to the list. My preference? I’d rather be where I am, trying to help the football program grow into something special.

Ted Hunter (Seattle)

Do you think it is a given that LeBron James and/or Kobe Bryant would have won a NCAA title had they gone to college? LeBron said he would have gone to OSU and Kobe said he would have picked UNC over Duke.

John Calipari (1:38 PM)

I don’t know the teams they had at the time and they couldn’t have done it by themselves. But that’s a great starting point to have!
