Alfonso Smith Signs with the 49ers

Former Kentucky running back Alfonso Smith has signed a contract with the San Francisco 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers signed running back Alfonso Smith to a one-year deal on Tuesday. In order to make room on the roster, the team has waived/injured guard Fouimalo Fonoti.

Smith originally signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 2010. He spent four seasons with the Cardinals, playing in 43 games and registering 48 carries for 156 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 13 special teams tackles. In 2013, Smith appeared in all 16 regular season games and registered 18 carries for 54 yards and one touchdown and had six special teams tackles.

A 27-year-old native of Louisville, Ky., Smith played collegiately at Kentucky where he appeared in 49 games for the Wildcats over four seasons and tallied 957 yards and eight touchdowns on 215 carries.

Fonoti signed as an undrafted free agent with the 49ers on May 12, 2014.

Smith was a Wildcat from 2006-09 and finished his career with 957 yards rushing, 322 yards receiving, and 10 total touchdowns.
