A.J. Reed Selected #42 by Houston Astros

A.J. Reed was selected as the first pick in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft on Thursday. Reed was chosen 42nd overall by the Houston Astros, a somewhat surprising move since the organization had not shown much interest in the two-way superstar.

“Getting drafted by the Astros is something I’m very happy about. A great organization and a team I feel like is a good fit for myself. I feel like I can add a little bit of power to the organization.”

“They’re excited to have a power bat and I’m excited to be that guy.”

When asked about becoming a millionaire: “I’m really excited about that” Reed added that the money is nice, but he isn’t really thinking about that. His goal is to play in the major leagues.

The SEC Player of the Year and Golden Spikes Award finalist shared his draft moment with his mom and family. He said his mother Debbie “Gave me a hug, told me she was happy for me and loved me. It was a good time for us.”

He is the first player in SEC history to rank as the league leader in wins (12) and homers (23.)
