I was sixteen years old, and a junior in high school. The Cats were on a roll through the NCAA tournament in 1998 and were known for their cardiac comebacks. My entire family was watching the game together in the living room and the Cats were down by eighteen. My mom decided she couldn’t take the anxiety any longer and retreated to another room to watch the second half.
My sister, Dad and I remained in the living room but my Dad was the most unhappy of us all. Halfway through the second half he decided he couldn’t take it anymore and decided to take a walk and let off some steam…he just couldn’t take another dream-stealing performance by the Blue Devils.
Then it began. Wayne Turner put the team on his back and courageously brought the team back into the game. The Cats were then getting second chance points and more free throw opportunities and point by point they were making their infamous comeback. Right after Cameron Mills hit the three to give Kentucky the lead, my sister and I were jumping in celebration in the living room. My Dad then peeked his head inside to see what happened after he heard the yelling.
Both my sister and I yelled together, “GET OUT!”
Our Dad obliged and remained outside the remainder of the game (the things we do for a UK win). We all know what happened. The sweet revenge we had longed for over nearly six years now had been complete. The Comeback Cats won the game, 86-84 to win the regional final and advance to the Final Four and eventually their seventh national title.
Of all the games I’ve watched over the years, this is my fondest memory. Not only was it quite hilarious that my Dad was not allowed back in the house, but the chills and excitement that game brought, I’ll never forget it.
