Gosh I hope not, but it’s a valid question at this point. Who is Karron Johnson? Karron Johnson was originally a 4-star recruit ranked the #57 player in the class of 2009. The 6′ 8” PF originally signed with Oklahoma State, but then de-committed and spent 2 years at two different JUCOs (Moberly Area Community College in Missouri and Midland College in Texas). He then signed…again…with Oklahoma State last November. Now it seems Johnson and Oklahoma State have parted ways…again.
According to Yahoo! sports, Coach Travis Ford said, “He won’t be here, that’s all I want to say about that.” (source)
Why would UK fans care? (Because I know BBN502 is going to ask that in the comments section). Before committing to Oklahoma State the second time, Kentucky was on Johnson’s short list. Could Kentucky be on his list again? Johnson was named the Preseason National Junior College Player of the Year by The Sporting News, and Calipari has been looking for players who would be around for more than a year (especially a big man). Kentucky is currently looking at JUCOs Stan Simpson and God’s Gift Achiuwa, as well DePaul de-commit Braeden Anderson for next year.
Here’s why I hope they don’t add Karron Johnson to that list. First, he has been to six schools so far in his career (3 high schools, 2 JUCOs and Oklahoma State). Second, the mere fact that he attended one of those schools should cause you concern (Laurinburg Prep – home to former “recruit” Chris Hill). Third, if Travis Ford gave him two chances and now has parted ways, that speaks volumes to me.
Of the other three big men mentioned (Stan Simpson, God’s Gift Achiuwa and Braeden Anderson), I would be fine with any of them.
