Wildcats win over Miami (OH), South Florida and Ohio St.

While most fans were caught up in the exciting football season opener in Louisville, other Big Blue Nation programs were busy taking care of business themselves. The women’s volleyball team played in the Kentucky Classic tournament. The tournament required the Cats to play three matches against three tough opponents, Miami Ohio, South Florida and Ohio St.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]

On Friday the Wildcats shutout Miami Ohio 3-0 with a strong defensive performance. “It was a nice win tonight; it’s always nice to win 3-0,” UK coach Craig Skinner said. “Miami is a disciplined team and a well coached team. You need to force them into making mistakes, and I think we did a good job of that. We continue to get better; and some individuals did some nice things today. I thought we blocked very well tonight and that needs to continue to be a strength of ours.”

That set the stage for Saturday which started with a match against South Florida. The match went 5 sets before the Cats pulled out a 3-2 (25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 21-25, 15-10) win. The Wildcats recorded 62 kills on .227 hitting in the most balanced offense attack of the season. The win put the Wildcats into the title match with Ohio St.

Ohio St. who entered the match against the 16th ranked Cats undefeated. The ladies were on a roll though and took home the title with a 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 27-25, 25-20) victory.

“We’re really excited about this win because Ohio State is great team,” UK coach Craig Skinner said. “I thought our seniors really stepped up when we needed them, and Stephanie Klefot made some unbelievable plays at some critical times. It was an exceptional team effort, and I’m really proud of the girls for playing the way that they did.”
