Wildcats Preparing for Auburn

The Wildcats are busy preparing for Auburn. The game is set to kickoff on Saturday at 7:30pm and is being aired on ESPN/ESPN2. You can listed on the radio on BBSN and online at ESPN3.com and right here at Nation of Blue. Now that we have that housekeeping out of the way, let’s get back to practice. Auburn, ranked 8th, will be at Commonwealth for the Wildcats SEC home opener.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]

Joker is working the Wildcats hard on the practice field. “We had good tempo (in practice),” Phillips said. “The thing that we have talked about this week is making sure that we execute. Execute assignments, making sure of your alignment and execute the proper technique. It is not alright to drop the football, it is not alright to get out of your gap and it is not alright to miss a tackle.

“We also want to make sure that the guy beside you is holding you accountable for not executing,” Phillips continued. “In that, I think that our guys had a good practice. Usually, when you see a guy screw up you hear someone say, ‘That’s alright, that’s alright, we will get it,’ that is not alright. It is not alright. We had that type of temperament today that it was not alright. You have to stay in your gap. I am expecting you to be there so you can bounce the play to me. We had a better practice today because we are asking our kids to think that way.”

We know that what happens on the practice doesn’t relate to game day though. The Wildcats need a win, and they need a win in a bad way. Not only for their chances at a bowl game at the end of the season but also to regain some of the lost confidence of fans. The loss in Gainesville was almost expected. The loss in Oxford made much more of an impact.

On Wednesday Joker talked about the Wildcats having to win during the week before they could win on Saturday.

“You don’t win games just on Saturday,” Phillips said. “You win games on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and then on Saturday things come natural because you have seen things at game speed and the different things and schemes that you need to see. You just don’t win games out here on the football field. You win them in the classroom. You win them in the film room and that is what we have to help these young men to understand.”

We’ll only know on Saturday night if the Wildcats can rebound from the recent blows.
