Several former and current University of Kentucky men’s golfers posted strong showings at day one of the 2010 Kentucky Open, including recently departed seniors Jordan Blann and Ben Fuqua, and current Wildcat freshman Cody Martin. The three-day 54-hole tournament is being played at Lexington Country Club (par 72). The second round will begin at 8 a.m. ET Wednesday.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]
Blann posted the best UK finish, carding a 3-under-par 69 to sit in a tie for first. Blann, who was a senior on the 2009-10 UK team, posted one of the best back-nine scores of the day with a 33 on his final nine holes. The 2009 and 2010 Kentucky State Amateur Champion will tee off Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. ET in the second round.
Blann is followed on the leaderboard by Fuqua and Martin, who both scored 2-under-par 70s and sit in a tie for sixth. Fuqua, a senior on the 2009-10 team, and Martin, a freshman, both scored 35s on the front and back nine to card the under-par score. Fuqua will tee of Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. ET while Martin is set to begin his second round at 8:09 a.m. ET.
Five other Wildcats are playing in the tournament, including UK graduates Derek Oldham and Cale Barr, and current Wildcats Chase Carpenter, Seth Blann and Joseph Barr. Oldham, a member of the 2009-10 team, posted a 1-over-par 73 to sit in a tie for 26th, while Cale Barr, a senior on the 2007-08 team, carded a 4-over-par 76 and is tied for 72nd.
Carpenter, a junior, and sophomores Seth Blann and Joseph Barr, each scored 3-over-par 75s and are tied for 56th going into round two.
